It is indeed a privilege to have been at the helm of Government General Degree College Salboni since its inception. Our journey began in the academic session of 2014-15, and as we near the completion of a decade, I reflect with pride on the progress we have made so far. Over the years, we have welcomed numerous new teachers and staff members, hailing from various corners of our state, spanning from the extreme north to the extreme south. Many among them are youthful, brimming with energy and enthusiasm, and they have seamlessly integrated themselves into the rich culture and heritage of the Jungle Mahal area.
In the early years of the twenty-first century, the people of this region grappled with challenges to their livelihoods, particularly due to the Maoist movement. This upheaval especially affected the younger generation, depriving them of educational and employment opportunities. Today, however, thanks to the establishment of our college, young girls and boys have the opportunity to pursue their studies while remaining close to their families. Our academic offerings initially focused on language subjects (Bengali, English, Sanskrit, and Santali) and social sciences (History, Political Science, Philosophy, and Sociology). In 2016, we introduced the Science stream, comprising Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Each academic year, we organize an annual athletic meet and cultural competition. In 2017, we had the honour of hosting "Sampriti th Saptaha," a special programme commemorating the 125 anniversary of Swami Vivekananda's Chicago Address, funded by the Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal. Furthermore, our students actively participated in inter-college sports events organized by the affiliating university and the Government of West Bengal. Additionally we observe Students' Week during the first week of January every year. Educational tours, field visits, talks, extension lectures, and conferences are regular features organized by various departments. Moreover, students from different departments contribute to the publication of wall magazines.
Our Teachers' Council plays a pivotal role in administration, and various committees within the council regularly organize seminars and webinars. Our focus is on transitioning from a developing institution to a developed one in the coming decade. This journey will undoubtedly pose challenges, but with dedication and collective effort, I am confident we will overcome them and continue to thrive.
